Thermofoil, melamine and laminate doors take paint only over a bonding primer made to grip slick factory surfaces, followed by a sprayed topcoat, which lets doors that would otherwise shed ordinary paint within months hold a new finish instead.

Melamine, thermofoil and high-pressure laminate are plastics, and plastic offers paint nothing to hold. Wall paint, ordinary primer and most hardware-store kits come off them in sheets, starting at the edges and handle holes. Cabinet painting on these materials only works once the surface has been scrubbed, scuffed evenly and coated with a bonding primer built for glossy plastic and laminate.
The bonding primer needs a few days to reach full adhesion before the topcoat goes on, which is why these doors spend slightly longer in the booth. After that, the topcoat is sprayed in thin coats like any other kitchen. The cabinet painting finish on a well-prepared melamine door is as hard and as smooth as on a painted MDF door.
Thermofoil is vinyl, heat-pressed as a skin over MDF, and once heat and steam have lifted it, nothing paints it back down. Doors beside the dishwasher, above the kettle and flanking the range go first, curling and bubbling at the edges. Such a door gets either stripped to bare MDF with heat and painted as MDF, or swapped for a new door sprayed to match.
Every door gets checked at the visit and any that have begun lifting are marked. Peeling thermofoil does not, and any cabinet painting company claiming otherwise is booking itself a callback.
Exposed melamine edges are the weak spot. Thin edge banding chips at corners and around handle holes long before the faces show wear. Painting thermofoil, melamine and laminate doors therefore includes regluing or replacing loose banding, filling and sanding chipped corners, and giving edges the same primer and topcoat as faces. A sprayed coat wraps an edge far better than a brush ever could, one more reason this work is sprayed.
